In today's session, we will briefly discuss the hierarchy of assessment practices. Next, we will examine opportunites two digital tools, Padlet & Google Forms, offer for collecting formative assessment data. Finally, participants will explore these tools and share a content-specific formative assessment idea for a given standard.
Learning Outcomes
MHHS staff will be able to:
  • articulate the 3 layers of a balanced assessment system;
  • reflect on formative assessment opportunities when using digital tools (i.e. Padlet or Google Forms);
  • reflect and share possible content specific digital formative assessment ideas.

Formative Assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides immediate feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to help students improve their achievement of intended instructional outcomes.

Benchmark Assessment is the administration of short tests (focus is generally on reading and math) throughout the school year (from three times a year to as often as once a month) that help teachers better understand students’ progress through the curriculum and/or on material in state exams.

Summative Assessment is a tool used after instruction to measure student achievement which provides evidence of student competence or program effectiveness.

II. Formative Assessment DRIVES Instruction | 15 minutes

Formative assessments continuously measure student understanding; and the results should DRIVE future instructional design to meet individual learning needs. In essence, formative assessment helps teachers answer these 3 successive questions:
  • What do I want my students to learn?
  • How will I (and my students) know when they have learned it?
  • How will I (and my students) respond when there is difficulty in learning it?

Ensure Student LearningTeachers are encouraged to clearly identify and communicate instructional goals to students in order to help them achieve intended learning outcomes.

Focus on ResultsTeachers are encouraged to provide descriptive feedback and ongoing instruction based on formative assessments results that are directly aimed at supporting student improvement.

Create Learning PartnershipTeachers are encouraged to provide opportunities for students to participate in reflective processes around formative assessment results as partners in the learning process.
